Winter Wonderland Party: Game Ideas

If you live in snowy place, then your outdoor Winter Wonderland Party game options are plentiful-- there is sledding, snowball fight, snow fort building and so much more... but undoubtedly the day of your party, there may not be any fresh new snow... or you may live somewhere where snow doesn't even fall. No worries, there are plenty of indoor game ideas to ensure a wintry good time! Here are some of them:

Freeze Dance
This is a classic game, and although it's great year round, it's name is very appropriate for a Winter Wonderland party. To make it more wintry, play "winter time" music. Here are some winter music ideas:

Holiday Songs about winter like, Let it Snow and Winter Wonderland
Indy Rock Winter Songs Playlist
Classic Rock Winter Songs

After you have your playlist ready... just turn on the music and let the crowd dance. Once the music stops, everyone must freeze. First to move is out... Keep going until one dancer is left.

Blizzard Relay (Indoor)
Divide the party into 2 teams. Have a "race course" route-- say, down the hall, into a bedroom and back. Give each team 20 cotton balls ("snowballs"). For each person's turn, he/she must place the cotton balls on a paper plate, and walk through the course, then pass the cotton/snow balls to the next team mate. First team to finish wins. This can also be done with 10-15 rolled up socks.... The more stuff to carry, the harder this becomes.

Cold Feet
Gather all those single socks, and add a few pairs in as well. This is a game to see how many socks one can put on in a minute. Make sure to take pictures when many socks are being worn!

Winter Suitcase Relay
Divide the party into 2 teams. Fill 2 bags or "suitcases" full of winter clothes, give a suitcase to each team. Include items like snowpants, hat, goggles, ear muffs, mittens, winter socks, boots, jackets, long underwear and more. Create a course in your house, say, down a hall, into a room and back. For each person's turn, he/she must put on all the clothes and items in the suitcase, and walk through the course, then take them off. The next person does the same thing. This repeats until all team members have gone. First team to finish wins.

Chocolate Party Game: Chocolate Taste Test with Free Printable Taste Test Scorecard

Life is like a box of chocolate-- you never know what you'll get... until you try it, right? Well here's the perfect game for your next Chocolate Party, Sweet Treats Party, or even Valentines Party, a Chocolate Taste Test Game. I've included free printable score cards perfect for getting guests ready to play.

Chocolate Taste Test Game
Here are 3 variations on the chocolate taste test game; one that is relatively simple (for those guests with possibly a little less discerning tastes, just love candy) to more sophisticated (for the real chocolate aficionado crowd.) Here are the details.

Guess Which Chocolate Candy Bar Taste Test
1. Print out the free Chocolate Taste test score cards below, and have one for each guest.
2. Buy 10 different types of chocolate candy bars. For instance, Hershey's milk chocolate, Twix Bar, Milky Way, Snickers, KitKat, Almond Joy, etc.) Break the candy bars into bite size pieces. Put pieces of one type of candy bar on a tray, then create a tray for all your samples.
3. At the party, have each guest take a score card and a pen, and sit down. Have them all close their eyes, and pass out a candy from one tray. After they've eaten it, have them open their eyes and write down which candy bar they think it is. (Note: make sure they close their eyes before eating the piece, since some candy bars can be recognized just by their shape.)
4. Repeat for each candy bar.
5. At the end of the game, have guests score their cards to find out which ones they got right and which ones were wrong.
6. Winner could receive all 10 different candy bars (uneaten, of course!)

Guess the Flavor in the Chocolate Box
We've all done it before, taken a big bite from a chocolate in a candy box, and then put it back... what was inside actually? Who knows! Well, this variation on the taste test can be a lot of fun, and have folks saying their "oohs and ahhs" or "eeeuuus" very loudly!
1. Print out the free Chocolate Taste test score cards below, and have one for each guest.
2. Buy several boxes of chocolates. For instance a box of See's Candy chocolates. Make sure the boxes are the same "style" in that they have all the same types of candies.
3. Put the same type of chocolate from each box on it's own tray. (You should end up with 10 trays, each with the same type of chocolate candy on it.)
4. Hand out the scorecards, and start passing the trays one at a time. Have folks write down what they think it is... cherry filling? peach filling? mocha? carmel? pure chocolate? etc. Have them rank the candy-- good or bad.
5. In the end, tally up all the best tasting candies.

Chocolate Aficionado Taste Test
This is a version for a slightly more sophisticated crowd. Instead of varying candy bars, only serve different chocolates-- from milk chocolate, to semi-sweet, to dark, to white. Here's more details...
1. Print out the free Chocolate Taste test score cards below, and have one for each guest.
2. Buy 10 different types of chocolate. For instance, different brands (Hersheys, Ghiradelli, etc.) and different flavors (dark, semi-sweet, milk chocolate, etc.)
3. Before the party, break chocolates and put each type on it's own tray.
4. At party, give guests a few hints on rating chocolate-- smooth/creaminess, bitter/sweet, texture, after taste, "bite" or crunch vs. waxiness, etc.
5. Hand out a score card for each guest, and start serving trays one at a time. Have guests right comments, and/or even rank (1-10, %, or A-F)
6. At the end, compare notes!

Time to say good bye to 2011, and ring in the New Year! Below are some cocktail ideas, perfect for your welcoming 2012 and beyond!

Red Dragon Cocktail
In January of 2012, the Chinese New Year will be welcoming the year of the Dragon. Offer up a Red Dragon Cocktail at your New Year's gathering to start the dragon celebration early. (recipe from cocktailmaking.co.uk)

1 cup Blood Orange Juice
3 tablespoons sugar
8 oz. Tequila
7 oz. Triple Sec
1 blood orange peel for garnish
Mix the orange juice and sugar in a sauce pan on low heat to get a syupy texture. Allow to cool. Combine rest of ingredients (besides peel) into a large pitcher. Add ice, and pour into a margarita glass. Garnish with orange peel.

The Purple Mayan
As we all know, the ancient Mayan calendar has some pretty hefty predictions for late 2012. Here's a cocktail to toast to this myth, and live long after 2012! (recipe from End of Times Party)

6 oz. can Limeade - frozen
9 oz. Tequila
2 oz. Blue Curacao
2 oz. Creme de Almond
Put in blender and fill to the top with ice. Blend until smooth, and toast to our destiny!

Trendy Cocktail for 2012
Just google "Cocktail Trends 2012" and be amazed about the trends that are hitting local bars, restaurants and clubs around the world. Be a trend setter, and bring these home to your party as well! Your guests will be "wowed" by your cocktail savviness! Here are just a few that caught my eye:

New Year's Party Game: Match the Resolution to the Person

We all have made them before... New Year's resolution after resolution... and how many really do we stick with? Well here's a fun party game this New Year's... a great way to get to know every guest just a little more, and possibly hold them to that resolution long after January 1st!

Jar of Resolutions: Match the Resolution to the Person
1. Set out a jar with lots of pieces of paper and pencils.
2. Have each guest fill out (at least) one paper with one of their New Year's resolutions.
3. After everyone has written one, then gather round and read the resolution. Have everyone try to pick who's resolution belongs to who.

Variations on the Game
Wishes for the New Year - Not wanting to share those resolutions? Make guests the jar a "Wishes for the New Year" and have each guest write their top wish for the New Year.

Memories from the Year - Instead of the future, have guest write a great or important memory that happened the past year, and then let all reminisce.

Bring Back the Christmas Carolers!

When was the last time you had holiday carolers come by your house? No, I'm not talking about paid performers, I'm talking about good ol'fashioned, regular folks like you and me out caroling?

In the past 6 years since we've lived in our house in the suburbs we've had one set of carolers come by. It was almost magical to hear some singing from outside. I couldn't believe it! There was also a friend of mine one year who organized neighborhood kids to carol around her block... but they didn't make it as far as our house.

I think it's a great tradition! I'm going to try to rally some troops (i.e., my kids and their cousins) on Christmas Eve to head out around the block for some fun this year. I hope they are as motivated as me!

Earlier this season, at an antique store, I spotted this great Christmas Carol song book below. It looks like it dates to the 1950's and was a handout from Security-First National Bank, advertising their Christmas Club savings fund. Below are a few sheets of it... perfect to print out and head out on your own caroling expedition!

Italian American Christmas Eve Dinner

This year we are having an Italian-American Christmas Eve Dinner - San Francisco Style! No, I don't have even the slightest hint of Italian in me... it's all my husband's side... but in honor of his 90 year old grandmother who is joining up this year, I thought it would be fun to have a "theme" for our Christmas Eve dinner.

It didn't take me long to come up with the Italian theme. Then, when I started brainstorming menu ideas, well, I couldn't help put the San Francisco spin on everything-- our beloved city!

Here's the highlights of what we'll be enjoying.

This delicious tomato based seafood soup hails from a Genoa Italian fisherman who settled in the North Beach area of San Francisco. Cioppino is the perfect dish for winter-time, given it is Dungeness crab season out here as well! The recipe I'm going to follow is from Saveur Magazine (and, yes, their Dec. 2011 issue is, "Italian Christmas"!)

Vintage German Advent Calendar

The countdown to Christmas is on. This morning, the first thing out of my son's mouth was, "Where's the Christmas Advent Calendar?!" My family loves advent calendars. This year the kids have 3 each (yes, 3)... One that my mom gave each of them (great vintage German advent calendars, one pictured above), one that I gave them (chocolate ones from Trader Joes, how could I resist the price) and one that is a wall hanging, a family tradition hung year after year.

Ho, ho ho! It's been a bit since I've posted on my blog. No, the turkey Thanksgiving didn't get me, just been a busy bee catching up with orders (including some new invites on the way), and coming to the realization that the holidays are on their way!

BBQ Sauce Label Inspiration for a Western BBQ Bash Invitation by B.Nute productions

I'm not sure if it was the time of day, and I was particularly hungry, but when a customer requested a BBQ invitation-- and mentioned they were holding it at a Steak House... the first thing that popped into my mind was BBQ sauce!

Inspiration is truly everywhere. I had so much fun designing this invite. I hand made the background pattern... it has an old west, Victorian-weathered feel to it. Then, I made a bold "badge" shape to contain all the invitation details. More weathered textures, and lots of old western fonts... and it's time for some grilling and fun.

Mmmm, mmm good!

Over a year and a half ago, in early 2010 I was asked by a customer to create a Mustache Bash party invitation. The mustache craze as seen now had not yet gone "viral," but there were definitely some pioneers out there with many mustache party traditions.

Lo and behold, this party has turned out to be one of my most popular themes. I've customized it for all sorts of occasions; little boy birthdays, big boy birthdays, wedding showers, baby showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties, even a fiesta!

Just recently, a customer requested some more matching accessories, a photo booth sign, and a Pin the Mustache on the Gentlemen game. I was happy to oblige! I do love the look and have had so much fun designing it. So, a toast... "Long live the 'stache!"

Inspiration is everywhere! I can definitely attest to this. I must say, I can flip through a magazine, look out my window or spend about a second on the internet and will be inspired to make a new invitation.

When my sister asked me to create an invitation for her "Tuscan inspired" birthday celebration at a winery, the first thing that came to mind was Italian Pottery. If you happen to go to her house, you'd know why this came to mind-- not only is she nuts about Tuscany (and Provence), her home echos this color palette and styling to a T.

To create this Tuscan Party invitation, I looked through several different Italian pottery patterns and then hand drew my own. Then I scanned and "painted" it on the computer. Of course, a little "muddled" pottery texture in the background adds to the effect.

For a little less than a year, I've been working with a very talented group of designers called A Fresh Bunch.
