Happy New Year: 2010 Hot Trends, What's coming in 2011?

To wrap up the year, I wanted to add my 2 cents about some trends I've been noticing-- would love to know your favorite things from this past year, and what you look forward to seeing in 2011!

Move over Owl, Here Comes the Fox
Have you noticed that the fox is everywhere? First it was birds, then owls, and now the sly fox has seemed to have taken it's place. Although these cute little woodland creatures seem to co-mingle so well, I've definitely noticed that the fox is the hottest in the crowd! Let's see if he can stay on top in 2011.

Is the cupcake reign over? Some would argue yes, some would say no way... but let me tell you, any treat on a stick is just too cool. The cake pop phenomenon is just so great. Have you seen them yet? If not, you must check it out!



Photo Booth Props: Beyond the Mustache
Mustache props are so cute, but folks are definitely moving on... there are clown props on a stick, santa/christmas props on a stick.... and much more. I think we just love to put things on a stick and make funny faces! I wonder where this trend will lead? Perhaps it may lead back to just a good ol' dress up box next to the photo booth... like those shops at the amusement park where you can dress in western garb and get your photo taken. Who knows. But, for now, I expect to see many more props on a stick at parties for fun "candid" pics!

Cupcakes have their fun with cute sticks to put in them, and now cakes can get that attention too! Aren't cake buntings the best? I just love anything "mini" and this is definitely one of those things that just make a cake. You can create a whole party on top of the cake now... the question is, who will want to eat it when it looks so cute? I look forward to more cake bunting in 2011, and can't wait to "miniaturize" more things to put around the party scene!

Christmas Break Activity: Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments

The Perfect Christmas Break Activity for the Family
Christmas break is upon us! The kids are out of school, and ready for some holiday fun. I know, I know, there is still so much to do before the big day, but this year, I've tried to give myself a little break and enjoy the season.

Here is one of the activities I've done with my kids - making dough ornaments. Each stage -from playing with the dough to painting, was loads of fun, and now we have some great home made gifts to give family and friends. Below are instructions for your Christmas Break Activity.

How to Make Salt Dough Christmas Ornaments
Simple Salt Dough Recipe
3/4 cup all purpose flour
3 Tablespoons salt
1/3 cup water

Instructions
1. Mix the dough ingredients together, and set out on an area for kids (and you) to play! Roll, knead, and have fun.
2. After playing with the dough, get out your cookie cutters and begin to cut into your favorite holiday shapes.
3. Place the dough on cookie sheets to bake. Use a skewer to make a hole in the top so it can be strung with ribbon and put on a tree.
4. Bake in the oven at 250 degrees fahrenheit for about 1.5-2hours or until firm.
5. Once cooled, dust off any excess flour, and paint.
6. Seal the ornament with a clear acrylic like Mod Podge. We used Mod Podge Sparkle to add some glitter.
7. Almost there-- now string the ornaments with ribbon, and hang on your tree or give as presents!

Happy New Year!!

Are you ready for the big night? Do you have plans to attend a gala affair? If not, why not throw your own little New Years Soirée. Whether you want a large party or a small intimate gathering, this elegant New Years Eve Soirée is the perfect party for you! Here are some ideas for your festive evening.

New Years Eve Soirée Inspiration Board

Decoration Ideas
Pick a Palette - How about silver and blue, or gold and black? An elegant, yet simple palette is perfect for a New Years gathering, just make sure there is some sparkle to go with the bubbles of the champagne. Use this palette in all your serving items and paper products- For instance, with a silver and ice blue palette, make sure to have a silver tray, a silver ice bucket, and some light blue napkins and small plates for nibbles.

Clocks and Watch Faces - Time is of the essence on this night, so make a decoration wall of clocks, or use vintage watch faces as decoration on the buffet or bar to remind everyone to watch the clock!

Vintage Noise Makers - Get out the noisemakers; the rattles, the blowers, the bells-- and get ready for some noise! Vintage Noise Makers can add also be great decoration elements before the noise begins. Put a bunch of festive blowers in a low vase, scatter bells and rattles on a buffet table. Make sure to add some hats as well.

Balloon Ceiling - There's nothing more festive than a whole bunch of balloons dropping from the "sky" at midnight. Find a simple utilitarian netting, and drape across a large portion of the ceiling. Fill with balloons. (Use a pump to blow up the balloons to save your breathe!) At midnight, pull down 2 ends of the netting and let the balloons fall on all the guests!

Menu Ideas
Since the timing of the New Years Eve party is typically pretty late (so guests stay until midnight), why not instead of serving a full dinner meal, tailor your menu to a theme-- whether it be hearty foods or sweets, it's nice to have nibbles. Here are some possible menu themes:

  • Hearty Hors D'Oeuvres - Head to a store like Trader Joe's and pick through their wide variety of hors d'oeuvres. From quiches to kabobs, you're sure to find plenty of hearty nibbles for your crowd.
  • Dessert Bar - A heavenly dessert bar is a great way to ring in the new year... cupcakes, cookies, and lots of sweet treats are sure to please.
  • Champagne and Cupcakes - Instead of a wide selection of desserts, concentrate on just cupcakes and champagne. There are so many different flavors of cupcakes available these days, all your guests will be pleased.
  • Martinis Madness - Champagne is great at midnight, but why not keep your bar to only martinis? Add some matching sweet or savory nibbles along with each different martini recipe. For instance, serve some Lemon Bars with a Lemon Drop Martini, or chocolate candies with a Chocolate Martini Recipe.  
  • The Ritz: Cocktails and Caviar - Oo, la, la... serve only the best at your soirĂ©e, caviar and cocktails! 


Games for All
Resolution Jar - Have guests write down one of their resolutions on a slip of paper. At one point in the evening, read off the resolutions and guess who's they are. Another variation of this game is to have guests write 3 resolutions (2 they truly hope to do, and one that is made up.) Post the slips of paper on a wall and let guests read them, and decide which resolution is not true.

Time Capsule - Create a time capsule from the year. Have every guest bring something special, or memorable from the past year to include in the capsule. Perhaps it's an article from a newspaper of a newsworthy event, or maybe it's something more personal like a drawing from your child. Make sure to put their name on the item. Promise to open the capsule at a New Years party 5, 10 or 20 years later to see what everyone included!

Dress up your holiday table with these free printable old fashioned Father Christmas tags and Christmas Crackers. Below are instructions on how to print the tags as well as make a simple cracker, perfect to dress up the holiday table at each guest's place.

How to Make a Simple Christmas Cracker
Here's a step by step guide to make Christmas crackers of your own. Although these ones won't "pop", they still will be quite entertaining, especially if you find nice goodies to put inside!
1. Gather your materials for this project. You'll need photocopies of old Christmas music, festive ribbon, empty toilet paper rolls, double sided tape, and printed Father Christmas tags (see below.)
2. Fill toilet paper roll with treats-- little candies, chocolate coins, candy canes, or even small toys will be perfect.
3. Roll toilet paper around photo copy of music. Use double stick tape to attach.
4. Tie festive ribbon on either end of the wrapped toilet paper roll.
5. Your cracker is almost complete...
6. Tape Father Christmas tag to front of cracker for a perfect holiday cracker.

Vintage Holiday Cards - Last year I spent hours in an antique store in Portland scouring through bins of vintage holiday cards... this year they are in prominent display! Whether you get your cards at an antique store, or at Dover Publishing, for their collection of Old Fashioned Christmas postcards, be sure to fill your space with these images for charm. Drape a ribbon garland over the mantle, and hang the cards from clothes pins across the garland, or set the cards on the mantle. Another alternative is to buy an inexpensive embroidery hoop. Then, simply pin the cards around the wreath.

Vintage Crackers - There's nothing more festive than a festive Christmas cracker set at each person's place at the Christmas table filled with little goodies! Many are available online, and/or if you're up for it, you can make your own!

There is much history surrounding the Christmas Yule log, a tradition that started even before Christmas itself! Leave the hauling of a large log for another time, but make sure to have a roasting fire in the fire place throughout the party. If you'd like to add a little French flavor to your party, serve a Bouche de Noel for all to enjoy!


Father Christmas
Well before the legend of St. Nicholas hit the British Isles (St. Nicholas' legend came to Britain around 1066), the area was seeped with traditions of Father Christmas. The rituals of Father Christmas are many, but he became known as the bestower of blessings and bounty at winter time. It was thought if you showed him hospitality, the winter would be a little less harsh. By the time of the Vikings, the idea of secret visits from Father Christmas, leaving gifts, added to the mythology.

Father Christmas was banned when the Puritans came to power, and it wasn't until the Victorian era that Father Christmas made a comeback. He was prominently featured as the Ghost of Christmas Present in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Carry on the tradition at your party, and share a little history of Father Christmas. Fill your space with images of him (the man dressed in the long cloak), and give the "Ho Ho Ho" of Santa a rest for the evening!

Parlour Games
Entertaining your guests at parties with games is not something new! Many books have been written, even from long ago, to suggest party games that will prevent "long awkward pauses" during your party. Below are just a few summarized games from a wealth of ideas from the book "How to Entertain Your Guests - A 1911 Collection of Indoor Games."

Noah's Ark - This game is more of a way to have guest mingle and find their "dinner partner" or whom they will be sitting next to at dinner. The game suggests putting a small picture of an animal on the invitation that you send (or writing the word is fine too). Then, at the party, the person needs to find their "partner" or matching animal. The pair would then head off to the table to sit next to each other. You could also hand out the animal names at the party, and have folks find their partner right before dinner.

Labyrinth of Presents - This one is a little more elaborate to set up, but could make your guests feel like kids again! Tie the end of a very long string to the top of your guests "goodie bag" or small gift. Then begin to wrap the string around the room in a maze-- around chair legs, a table, etc. At the end of the string, put a tag with the guest's name. Now proceed to do this with all your guests' gifts. In the end, this will be a tangled maze of fun! (This may be best to do in a room not used for the party.)

Shadow Game - In the book "How to Entertain Your Guests - A 1911 Collection of Indoor Games," there were many shadow games suggested. One such game is much like making finger shadows and guessing what animal it is (i.e., making a crocodile with your fingers, and casting the shadow on a wall). This game suggested taking ornaments, and casting the shadow on a wall, then guests need to guess what the ornament is (tin soldier, drum, angel, etc.). Obviously, make sure they can't see you with the ornament. You could be behind a hung white sheet, and cast the shadow on to the sheet with the guests on the other side.

Peppermint Party Ideas- Decorations, Menu, Games and More

Decoration Ideas
This party couldn't be simpler to decorate-- think ruby red and crisp white. A modern, clean and crisp look will make this a festive affair. Below are some red and white decoration ideas:

  • Red and White Crepe Paper - Drape red, then white crepe paper from the ceiling to form a "tented" ceiling. A festive and a colorful addition to the space.
  • Red and White Balloons - Have bunches of red and white balloons scattered throughout the party space, or lining the walkway to the front door.
  • Red and White Table Linens and Paperware - A crisp white table cloth, and red napkin will look sharp and colorful. Now add red and white paper plates, napkins, cups, etc. Stay clear of patterns, and let the bold solid colors stand out. In the center of the table, have jars of candy canes. The more the merrier!
  • Jars of Candy Canes and Peppermints - Jars of peppermints and vases of candy canes throughout the party space will add to the look. You could also have jars of solid colored candies sprinkled in with the candy canes and peppermints. For red candies use red hots, red licorice, red M&M's, for white candies use mini-marshmallows, white mints, white M&M's, etc.


Menu Ideas
Get some red and white foods-- then mix and match and have fun! Below is a list of red and white food ideas-  some on their own, and some mixed together:

  • red licorice
  • red hots
  • cherry tomatoes and fresh mozeralla balls
  • strawberries and cream
  • raspberries and cream
  • red macaroons and vanilla frosting
  • marshmallows
  • coconut balls
  • powdered sugar cookies

Art Activity Ideas
Peppermint Garland
Buy several large bags of peppermint candies and twist ties. Have them out in large bowls on a table. Use a twist tie to tie the ends of a peppermint together. Now continue tying peppermints to each end. You can substitute small pieces of white yarn for the twist ties, and just tie the ends of the peppermints together with the yarn.

Red and White Pipe Cleaner Candy Canes
Spread red and white pipe cleaners out on a craft table, and let kids twist together and bend at the top. Voila, a candy cane pipe cleaner.... perfect as an ornament for a tree, or to tie on to a present.

Peppermint Frame
Get your glue gun out (or heavy duty glue) and some plain white inexpensive frames, and have guests glue peppermint candies to the front of the frame. Once covered, apply a generous amount of Modge Podge or similar acrylic clear coating to seal the candies. Let dry, and give to the guest to take home at the end of the party.

This is a take on a Halloween game called the Mummy wrap. Instead of toilet paper to wrap a person, use red and white crepe paper, and wrap the person like a candy cane! To play, have a team of 2 people be the "wrappers" and one person be the candy cane. Give each wrapper a crepe paper roll, one red and one white. Have the candy cane stand still in the middle, and have the wrappers walk around the cane until he/she is all wrapped up. Make sure to have the camera ready for a picture before the cane "breaks" through of the stripes!

Candy Cane Hunt
This game is just like an Easter Egg Hunt at Easter time, but instead of eggs, use wrapped "mini" candy canes. Depending on the party time and age of guests, you can hide the candy canes before the party, or while they are doing another activity. Limit the hunt to a room or specific area. When ready, give each guest a white bag and let the hunt begin!
