Scrapbook Paper Ideas: Party Hats including Printable Template

Mad Hatter Tea Party - Party Hats made with Digital Scrapbook Papers
I've been having a great time creating matching Digital Scrapbook Papers to go along with my party themes. This week on my blog I'm going to feature many of the great ways you can embellish a party with digital scrapbook papers. First up, party hats!

There's nothing like a good old fashioned party hat to celebrate a special day! This project is very simple. All you need is some white 8.5x11 card stock (found at most office supply stores), scissors, ribbon, some digital scrapbook papers, and the printable party hat template below.

Printable Party Hat Template from B.Nute productions
First, download/print the printable party hat template (see below). Print it on white 8.5x11 card stock as many times as you need.

Party Hat Template printed a second time with digital patterened paper.
(Mad Hatter Digital Scrapbook patterns shown here.)
Next, run the paper through your printer again, and print out with a patterned digital scrapbook paper. For this project, I am using my patterns from my Mad Hatter Digital Scrapbook Paper Pack.

Now cut along the lines, fold with a slight overlap and tape as a cone. Punch 2 holes on either side at the bottom and sting a ribbon through (knot on back so ribbon stays.) There you have it! Fun party hats for all.

If you are feeling creative, embellish the hats with crepe paper, pom poms, glitter, and more! Let the guests take home their hat as a memory of the fun.

Don't be late for this important date... kids will love this craft of designing their own pocket watch, a perfect art activity for your Mad Hatter Tea Party. Here's some step by step instructions to make your own watch.
1. Fold a third of a white piece of card stock over, and draw a circle with a knob on top. Make sure one side of the circle is on the fold.

4. Here's the outside of a decorated pocket watch.

5. Here's the inside!

6. Punch a hole in the top and string a ribbon through it so kids can put the watch around their necks like a necklace.

Mad Hatter Tea Party Decoration and Menu Ideas

Mad Hatter Tea Party Invitation by B.Nute productions on Etsy
What's a zany, colorful, whimsical delight? A Mad Hatter Tea Party, of course! This theme is great for guests young and old -- a birthday party, a baby shower, a bridal shower, a hens party, a moms night out... everyone is always ready for some silly tea party fun! Below are some decorating ideas and menu suggestions for your Mad Hatter Party.

A Little Inspiration!

Mixed Up, Mismatched Tea Cups and Pots
Head to your closets and find all those teacups given to you by our long lost aunt. Don't have any? Ask neighbors and friends if you can borrow a few, or head to the thrift store to find some. The more the better, and the more mismatched is ideal!
Whimsical Butterfly Design Teapot on Amazon
Now fill your Mad Hatter space with all your goodies, on the serving table, on the dining table, on the mantle! Use cake pedestals to raise some higher than others, the uneven display is great on the eye.
Polka Dot Teapot on Amazon
Don't forget to fill the pots with flowers and butterflies! (See below for details.)

Colorful Flowers and Butterflies
Paper Flowers with Pop!
Now it's time for some real color! Fill all those pots with bold flowers. Use artificial flower, real flowers, or paper flowers, take your pick, all will look great! (Check out another post of mine about tissue paper flowers)
Butterfly Bouquet from Martha Stewart
Once the flowers are in the pots, purchase some faux butterflies and stick them in the arrangement. The more the better. Again, this party is all about color, excess and whimsy! The above butterfly bouquet example from Martha Stewart shows how festive a bunch of butterflies look together! Many different types of artificial butterflies can be found at your local craft store or online.

Twinkle Lights and Paper Lanterns
Now it's time to look up! Fill the sky with twinkle lights and paper lanterns. If your indoors, hang lights all around the room and dangle paper lanterns from the light strings. If you are outdoors, hang lights in trees and paper lanterns above the table. If you haven't seen the original Disney version of Alice in Wonderland... now's the time. The scene for the Mad Hatter Party is filled with lanterns and lights!

If you're searching for paper lanterns, you must check out Luna Bazaar. It's a great resource for all types of paper lanterns-- different colors, shapes, prints, and more!

Casino Danglers from Amazon

Deck of Cards
It's time to put those decks of cards that are missing a card or 2 to use! You can either hand make a garland with hand cut paper hearts, and cards, or head to your party store and look in the casino party aisle for inspiration and ideas!

Also, scatter the cards on the top of the serving table and dining table. This will be a great addition to the look.

Little finger foods are great for a tea party! Below are a few ideas for your Mad Hatter party:

  • Tea Sandwiches - From simple cucumber tea sandwiches to elaborate smoked salmon sandwiches, you can find all types of tea sandwich recipes online sure to please all tastes!
  • Meat Pies - How about a little meat pie in a pastry shell. Easy finger food, and hearty to fill your guests tummies!
  • Salty & Sweet Mixed Up Treats - There are recipes galore online for cereal snack mixes. For your Mad Hatter party, create these same mixes, but add some color and whimsy-- use colored cereals (i.e., Fruit Loops or something similar), and/or mini marshmallows for color and the sweet taste!
  • Fruit Tarts - How great would a bunch of mini fruit tarts look on cake pedestal stands! Head to a local bakery to save time, unless you are inclined to make them yourself!

Mad Hatter Madness!

If you haven't noticed, it's Mad Hatter Mania out there these days with Tim Burton's rendition of the classic Alice in Wonderland about to be released! I'm excited to see his version! It definitely seems to be a different approach than 1950's Disney version!

Last year, I created this Mad Hatter party kit-- and happily, as the movie's release has been approaching it's become quite popular!

I'm particularly proud of the Personalized banner-- I just love the colors together. The bright lime green, pink, red and blue! I also love how the imagery plays with the different type faces.

So, are you ready to throw a Mad Hatter party? It's a great theme for birthday-- especially with Spring right around the corner. A picnic table set up outside, decorated to the hilt... I can picture it now. Or, how 'bout a Mad Hatter viewing party? Have friends over, a quick, crazy tea party-- then head to the movie theatre!

Here are a few more decorating ideas for your Mad Hatter Party:
  • Playing Cards Everywhere: Pick up a few decks of cards, and scatter all over the top of the table. It's easy, and very festive!
  • Flowers Everywhere: Jars of flowers, vases of flowers, garlands of flowers-- the more the merrier-- and mixed varieties even better! For this one, you can go several routes: fresh flowers will not only look amazing but smell great too! Silk or fake flowers can be just as appealing-- and from a distance look great (think flower garlands strung along the edges of the room or area...) Lastly, you could go with tissue paper flowers! Check out an older blog post of mine about tissue paper flower decorations.
  • Twinkle Lights: Drape a canopy of twinkle lights over the table. This will add glitter and magic to the scene.
  • Floating Butterflies: At your local craft store, pick up some decorative butterflies and hang above or around the table area from clear fishing wire. They'll flutter and float as your tea party settles... a great effect.
Would love to see a picture or hear your Mad Hatter ideas! I'm sure after the movie comes out, there will be loads of inspiring ideas as well!

So, it's off to a very important date.... have fun!

Eat Me, Drink Me, Mad Hatter Giftie!

When I threw a Mad Hatter Tea Party event at my daughter's school, I needed to come up with a "goody bag" treat to give out... This should of been an easy one to think up, but for some reason, it took me awhile. My concerns: I knew I needed to make a lot of them; I wanted them to not only be cute and in keeping with the theme, but also something hopefully that would be used after the party; and I also knew I had limited budget.

There was the "plant in a pot" idea, the "tea cup" idea... and then I it dawned on me... "oh, yeah, there's the 'Eat Me, Drink Me' idea!" I was so excited to remember... and those clues for Alice were also cute tags. I couldn't wait to make them!

So, out I went, to the local discount store, and found several different styles of mugs. With more budget (and time, of course) I would have loved to scour thrift stores for real china tea cups... but I also knew big mugs are always popular for big, strong cups of coffee or tea in the morning! Then I filled 2 clear goodie bags, one with tea bags, one with candies, and strung an "Drink Me" tag, and a "Eat Me" tag on each.

I also thought this goodie bag idea could also work for kids... The mug could be plastic or ceramic depending on the age group, and since many young folks don't drink tea, I also thought putting those individually packaged lemonade mixes in the "Drink Me" bag would be great.

Well, the Mad Hatter night was lots of fun, and the gifts were well received!

Mad About Paper Flowers- Mad Hatter Party Decor

I've been aching to make some paper flowers... I purchased Klutz's Tissue Paper Flower book sometime ago, thinking some cold winter day, my daughter and I could make some flowers and brighten up our space... Well, lo and behold, spring has sprung, the real flowers are out and I have still not made my paper flowers...

So, when I signed up to chair an event at my daughters school, which of course entailed throwing a party, I knew paper flowers would have to be in the mix! The event was our annual Founder's Day celebration-- I decided to go with a mixed up Mad Hatter theme... what a better way to honor all our mixed up, crazy volunteers than a fun, crazy Mad Hatter tea party.

I definitely knew I needed tea pots... and lots of them. And I wanted bright, festive colors. Paper flowers were perfect for that, and a lot less expensive than filling all the pots with real flowers, especially on a PTA budget!!

So, the morning of the party, I sat in my dining room, tissue paper everywhere, and made loads of flowers. I was pretty "stressed" about getting them done, but actually during the process, I relaxed (!) and had a great time! Also, I LOVED how they turned out!

I received many compliments at the party on the flowers... and am now enjoying them in their tea pots on my dining room table. The best part, is I know they will last a long time! :)

Mad Hatter Party

This past week, I hosted a crazy, mixed-up Mad Hatter Party
at my daughter's school for their annual Founder's Day celebration. It's an event that is meant to celebrate all the many, many extraordinary volunteers - past and present at our school. We are very fortunate to have so many great folks who give so much of their time... I thought the Mad Hatter theme was perfect for this crowd... I mean we all must be a little mad and crazy to volunteer so much, but we all know it's worth it!

There were some challenges for me with the event...
how on earth was I going to fill a huge space like the school auditorium...
especially on a PTA budget!?

Of course I made banners...
I just love banners, and I love how this one turned out!
I found great old-time engravings of different items
that are perfect for a the Mad Hatter theme....
Then I sprinkled in some festive lanterns, crepe papers and a bit more...
and voila!

I must admit, the space was by no means filled... but once the 100 or so people showed up, all the food was brought in, and the kids came to do some performances, the space was more than filled with crazy, mixed-up festivities!

In upcoming posts, I'll share more ideas from this party... and soon, I hope to have it prepped and ready as part of my Party Kit selection! If you're in a hurray, and can't wait to have your Mad Hatter Tea Party sooner-- just give me a hollar, I'd love to hear from you!
